WildFIRE RISK
Be Proactive
Our county has a VERY HIGH risk for wildfire. We live within the wildland-urban- interface. Nothing is more important than ensuring the safety of the people who live in Tuolumne County and the firefighters who protect us. A wildfire here can result in deaths and severe injuries, as well as catastrophic losses of property and devastating financial losses. As your District 1 Supervisor, I will advocate for increased funding dedicated to this effort.
Wildfire risk is a public safety issue. We need to protect our vulnerable senior and disabled populations in Tuolumne County. Factors such as a lack of financial resources or transportation and limited mobility make it more difficult for some to escape from a wildfire. In addition, stress and wildfire smoke pollution can exacerbate certain medical conditions.
To mitigate the negative impacts of wildfire in Tuolumne County, our county government in partnership with Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service needs to do the following:
Some corridors of county land are overgrown with highly flammable brush where there is a high risk of ignition from discarded cigarettes and vehicle sparks.
Ensure that people live in fire-hardened homes with wildfire-resistant landscaping and assist them to do so when they are unable to.
OES and Public Health can build a team to develop a plan for those whose health is impacted by smoke. They can seek grants to provide those most vulnerable to smoke with air purifiers and N95 masks and set up clean air shelters.
Define evacuation zones that ensure everyone knows where to go in the event of a wildfire without overloading specific evacuation routes.
Provide information about maintaining fire-hardened homes and landscaping, GO Bags, emergency planning, and wildfire evacuation zones and routes, in print, online, and via broadcast media.
As District 1 Supervisor, I will advocate for these improvements.
