Larry Coombes for district 1

About Larry

Local, Sensible, Qualified.

I graduated from Summerville High and returned to make my home in Tuolumne County over 30 years ago. My wife, Marianne, and I have lived in District 1 for 20 years.  My mother, Patte Coombes, M.D., was a well-known family practice physician and locally renowned pianist.

After graduating from UC Riverside, I worked as an IRS auditor and translated that knowledge into a successful career as a tax specialist. This background has given me an understanding of business and finance.

Being involved in the community is an important part of my life.  In my work with various organizations, I have sought to make Tuolumne County a better place for people from all walks of life.  My leadership in several groups has prepared me well for the job of District 1 Supervisor.

Projects I have been involved in:

A group formed to reduce the impacts of open pit mining on neighboring properties.

Opposed plans by Sonora High School to spend nearly one-half of the $23M Measure J bond funds on a new aquatic center, rather than needed classroom improvements as indicated in the bond literature.

Member of various boards of directors including: Coalition for Better Government which hosted candidate forums; Stage 3 Theater; and the Central Sierra Arts Council.

Free income tax preparation at the Senior Center, County Fair wine judge host and supervisor, and playing in several bands as well as the Columbia College Orchestra.

One of my goals as your District 1 Supervisor is to make the budget process more transparent and inclusive. I feel strongly that the County Courthouse should be used in a way that maintains its historical integrity. I’d like to see the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center receive its badly needed renovation to provide a proper working environment for our emergency personnel.

Why I'm Running

The two candidates running in the November runoff for District 1 Supervisor have very similar positions on many issues. I want to provide another perspective to District 1 voters. I recently retired from my practice as a tax specialist and now have some free time. The more I thought about the November runoff, and the more I spoke with friends and family, the more I realized we need an alternative viewpoint. I could provide it!

With my financial background and experience in local grassroots organizations, I can deliver for District 1 constituents. I know how to negotiate and compromise. I will listen to your concerns. And I will use common sense. Some issues impact our district more with the majority of homeless people here because County services are located here. I will ensure that the County continues it’s progress toward housing them. I will explore how to develop affordable housing working collaboratively with other Supervisors.

I was directly impacted by the Washington Fire when we were under mandatory evacuation. I saw that the roads were clogged. We need better evacuation plans and more fire protection services as the warming climate presents a higher fire danger.

Our Board of Supervisors has just approved a budget through the end of 2024. Few people know how County funds are being allocated. I have the skills to help the community understand where the County is spending our tax dollars.

I want to protect the historical integrity of the Courthouse which is on the National Register of Historic Places. I am committed to preserve other significant buildings. Our history is what draws tourists to Sonora.

My name will not be on your ballot but you can write in my name under District 1
